Welcome to a pictorial tour of First Step! The photographs
included in this presentation are representative of what
you will see if you visit one of our centers. There is a
slight difference in the centers. The photographs included
in this space were taken at the Hot Springs Center. |

Some children are faced with many problems in the first
few years of childhood. Whether they were born prematurely
or with a condition that requires special attention, First
Step provides therapies and services in our Early
Intervention program that fits their needs. |

Our Preschool Department provides a positive atmosphere
for learning. A Coordinator, certified in Early Childhood
Special Education, leads each class. The number of
instructors in the classes depends on the needs of the
students. |

It is a fact that some children need more attention and
care than others in the early phases of their education.
Our program for school-age children is designed to serve
those who need special focus during this time, whether
their needs are physical, emotional or medical. |

First Step adults enjoy many opportunities through our Day
Program. Independent living skills, including personal
grooming, cooking, ironing, folding laundry and setting a
table are taught. Our large adult department provides
space for exercise, music, arts and crafts as well as
visiting with friends.
The computer lab offers training opportunities for
learning. In addition to lessons offered on computer, our
adults produce a monthly newsletter. Of course no computer
lab is complete without its share of electronic games.
Classes change each hour, giving everyone a chance to
enjoy all the activities available. Our dedicated staff is
committed to helping each of our adults achieve the best
possible results. |

First Step’s On Our Own, resident program provides
independent living situations for adults 18 and over who
qualify. Group homes house either men or women and
accommodate up to eight adults in spacious, neat and
comfortable surroundings. Those who visit the homes remark
on their tasteful décor and cleanliness. Common areas are
nicely decorated and provide ample space for visiting with
friends, watching television, working puzzles or playing
board games.
Our group homes project a family atmosphere so our
residents can feel “at home”. This is reflected in the
personal items and mementoes that fill the private
bedrooms. Each resident is responsible for keeping his/her
room neat and clean, and everyone is expected to help with
the daily chores of the home.
For those ready to take the step toward more independent
living, individual apartments are available. All On Our
Own residents either attend the Day Program activities or
work through our Supported Employment program. |
